🏛️ How to Participate in the City Council Meeting

The Elk Grove City Council will decide on the Maverik project on Tuesday, November 12 at 6:00 PM. Here’s how to make sure your voice is heard:

Attend in person: Fill out a blue speaker card (available at the back of the room) and give it to the City Clerk. You may speak for up to three minutes per item.
Can’t attend? Send your comment by email or leave a voicemail at (916) 478-2286 before 4:00 PM on November 12.

As a resident of Elk Grove, I am writing in support of Protect Elk Grove’s appeal of the Maverik fueling station approved at East Stockton Boulevard and Grant Line Road.  This project should not move forward because it does not reflect the needs or safety of our community. Traffic on East Stockton Boulevard is already a daily problem, yet Maverik has not submitted final plans for the road work and expansion that would be required. Approving a project without those details puts our neighborhoods at risk.  Elk Grove already has more than 16 fueling stations within three miles of this location, including commercial diesel providers. Another 24-hour truck-scale facility is duplicative and unnecessary. Round-the-clock operations bring more congestion, late-night activity, and crime to an intersection that is already strained. Yet when the project was reviewed, the Elk Grove Police Department did not provide a call data report or meaningful safety review in the staff report. Residents deserve to know the real public safety impacts before a project of this size is approved.  Most concerning, the project was approved as a simple conditional use permit by calling it an “in-fill” project. In reality, this is a massive development on mostly open land with only a small existing building. Even the landowner and developer admitted this is just the first piece of the larger Grant Line Village project, and that they are using Maverik to get the rest of the development built. By breaking the project into smaller pieces, they avoided the full development review process and limited environmental review to only Maverik. In truth, the entire Grant Line Village should be reviewed together for its full traffic, safety, and environmental impacts. That is not honest planning.  Finally, this site is located next to Elk Grove’s Local Employment Area, which is intended to support a walkable community with less car dependence. A regional-scale fueling center directly undermines that vision by adding more traffic and more congestion.  I urge the City Council to uphold this appeal and deny the Maverik project. Elk Grove families deserve thoughtful planning that creates safe neighborhoods and a strong community image — not piecemeal approvals, more traffic, and another unnecessary fueling hub.
